Woods Wins American Fishing Series Event On Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Feb. 07, 2010 - Jasper, TX)… Pro Cody Woods of Jacksonville, Texas, caught three bass weighing 5 pounds, 10 ounces Saturday to win the FLW American Fishing Series Texas Division tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 32 pounds, 10 ounces. For his victory, Woods earned $24,680.

“It was slow today,” Woods said. “The sun came out and I didn’t want that to happen because it turned my bite off that I had going during the tournament. I knew where there were a few fish staging and I just happened to get lucky and catch three of them.

“I was so nervous (Friday) night just (to make the cut) that I poured a whole gallon of oil in my gas tank of my boat thinking it was my oil dispenser,” Woods added. “I’ve never won anything like this before.”

During the first two days of the tournament Woods used a floating Smithwick Rogue in three feet of water to catch his fish. On Saturday he switched to a red Rat-L-Trap with red hooks and managed to catch the winning three fish. Woods paired his Rat-L-Trap with braided line and threw it over grass in eight feet of water.

“With the braided line I can feel whether I hit grass or I have a bite,” Woods said. “I can feel it when I rip out of it.”

Rounding out the top five pros were:

2nd: Randy Cisler Mesquite, Texas 8 bass 31-0 $8,391
3rd: Charles Bebber Willis, Texas 12 bass 30-3 $5,923
4th: Tommy Martin Hemphill, Texas 15 bass 30-1 $4,936
5th: Team Chevy pro Larry Nixon Bee Branch, Ark. 11 bass 29-11 $4,442

Cisler caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Pro Division Friday - a 10-pound, 8-ounce bass - that earned him the day’s Big Bass award of $294.

Keith Honeycutt of Temple, Texas, won the Co-angler Division and $9,882 cash, with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 24 pounds, 6 ounces.

Honeycutt caught three bass weighing 4-11 Thursday while fishing with pro David Mullins of Coppell, Texas, to open the tournament in 24th place. On Friday he added five more bass weighing 10-14 to make the top-10 cut in second place while fishing with pro Timothy Griffin of Zapata, Texas. Finally, on Saturday, he sealed the win with five bass weighing 8-13 while fishing with Cisler.

FLW American Fishing Series Day 1 Early Bird Action

I ran up to catch the first 30 minutes of weigh-in.  The weather was cold and rainy all day and the fishermen looked like they were ready to get dry.  Fishing appeared to be tough looking at all the early sacks to weigh in.  13 LBS was leading when I left at 3:35 pm to get back to work.

Early guys on the boater side to come through who have reputations of being contentenders that weighed in while I was there were Dicky Newberry, Tommy Martin, Tommy Dickerson, Larry Nixon, Stephon Johnston, and Jeff Buchanan.  They all had between 3 to 5 fish with the biggest sack being around 11 lbs.

Here are a few pictures, sorry for the blurriness, my Nikon did not want to focus today.

Dicky Newberry decided to go easy on everyone on day one.  I am sure he is waiting to catch 23 Lbs tomorrow.

dsc_0292

Tommy showed off part of his sack.  It appears that he managed to forget his net and it cost him from having his limit.

dsc_0294

Tommy Martin was one of the first few to weigh in but and took the lead however it probably would not hold long.

Jeff Buchannan shows off part of his catch.

Larry Nixon pitches his catch in his bag.

Both of these guys got to hit the stage, many were fishless.

Stephen Johnston said he was glad to have atleast 4 fish in his sack.

Mr. Big Bass Splash Himself, Bob Sealy Named Citizen Of The Year By The Chamber

LATEST NEWS: Sealy named Citizen of the Year

By SHARON KERR

February 1, 2010
Posted: February 1, 2010, 11:53 AM CST

The 91st annual Chairman’s Banquet for the Jasper Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce opened to a packed house last Friday, Jan. 29.

Angel San Juan and his Channel 4 news crew surprised guests by showing up to film the chamber banquet as a shining example of a small city succeeding in a sagging economy. The show aired Saturday at 9 p.m.

Legislators Senator Robert Nichols and Representative Wayne Christian also showed up to honor area leaders and businesses who received awards for their contributions to that growth.

Jasper Mayor Mike Lout, who won last year’s Citizen of the Year award, drew chuckles when he said, “You think they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when they named me? Wait’ll I lay this one on you.”

He then named Bob Sealy as the new recipient of the citizen of the year award for creating the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash, the largest fishing tournament in the world and a business that brings millions to the local economy every year. Last year the tournament drew more than 100,000 participants. (The rest of this story can be found in the Beaumont Enterprise)

Anglers will take off from the Umphrey Family Pavilion located at 5438 Rural Route 255 West in Sam Rayburn, Texas, at 7 each morning. Weigh-ins will be held at the Umphrey Family Pavilion beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Sam Rayburn Reservoir American Fishing Series tournament is being hosted by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce.

Pros will fish for a top award of $25,000 plus a 198VX Ranger boat with 200-horsepower outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award of $10,000. If the co-angler meets the Ranger Cup guidelines, they will earn an additional $5,000.

The American Fishing Series consists of four divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast and Texas. Each division will consist of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points that could earn them a trip to the American Fishing Series Invitational on Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Ala., Nov. 4-6. The points champion from each division will qualify for the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup and a fifth Forrest Wood Cup qualifier will advance from the Invitational that is open to the top 50 anglers from each division.  (Entire story can be found at www.FLWOutdoors.com )

Over 300 anglers will hit the morning at day light to try to win either the Boater or Co-Angler division of this series.   The tournament fishermen should not be surprised at the fact the weather will be cold and damp for most of the even as is the case in so many tournaments this time of year.

With the FLW Tour event on the Red River in Louisinana starting soon, it appears some of the Tour fishermen decided to jump in this  seeing that they are only 2 hrs driving distance to each other.

Hemphill pro Tommy Martin and Chevy Pro Larry Nixon from  Arkansas (formally from Hemphill) are in town trying to pad their pockets and resumes with a good finish this week.
