Saturday, March 6th was another fine day on the water for the BFL Cowboy Division on Lake Sam Rayburn. Light south winds, blue bird skies, and temperatures hitting a high of 65 degrees sure helped to warm the water surface temperature. Stop #2 catch weight was 1012.09 lbs. for the pro division and 511.08 lbs. for the co angler division. This proves that more weight crossed the scales than on stop #1 on Toledo Bend where the catch weight was 803.03 lbs. for the pro division and 417.10 lbs. for the co angler division. Good new anglers, the bass are moving up!

What an outstanding show that pro angler, Aaron Johnson, of Bossier City, LA put on! He won 1st place with a total weight of 21.03 lbs. blowing everybody away. There was a whopping 3.93 lb. margin between Aaron and 2nd place. Aaron was in 42nd place two weeks ago on Toledo Bend BFL’s first stop. This brings Aaron up to 6th place for the year to date standings.

At blast off Aaron ran his Triton/Mercury rig to a Humminbird weigh point, threw down his Motorguide trolling motor in the mid lake area and had a heck of a day. Trying to decide what to throw, Lake Fork Tube, Stanley Itsebug, or a Sweet Beaver, it didn’t really matter because he caught bass on all of them. Aaron had no problem pulling those big sows out of the buck brush in 4 foot of off colored water that was 54 to 56 degrees. Using his 7 ft. extra heavy Kistler rod and Quantum reel spooled with 50 lb. Sufix or 20 lb Seagar line, he powered the bass out very easily. “The bites were very light”, Aaron added.

At 8 a.m., Aaron had only one 15 inch bass, and it was struggling to live. In Texas, you can not cull a dead bass. Aaron’s partner verified that the bass was still alive so he released it back in the water in hopes that he would be able to catch 5 more keepers for the rest of the day. This definitely worked out for Aaron once he figured out what the bass were doing. He wanted to give a big thank you to H&W Marina for keeping his Triton in top notch shape so he can be on the water.

BFL 2nd place winner goes to pro Billy Penick of Deer Park, TX with a weight of 17.10 lbs. Billy also focused on buck brush in the mid lake area. His big bass was caught using a spinnerbait with 17 lb. Viscous Fishing line. Using a Kicker Fish Kicker Craw in black/blue he was able to pick up the rest of his limit.

When Billy was ready to come in, nothing happened when he turned the key - the motor would not crank! This should serve as a reminder anglers, jumper cables saved the day for him. He was going to fish another area for about 30 minutes, but decided to come on in with his big sack because he didn’t want to be disqualified for being late due to boat problems. Billy wanted to thank Kicker Fish Bait Co. and Skeeter Boats.

Hats go off to pro angler, David Waller of Fort Worth, TX for winning 3rd place. He has been very consistent in his last 2 BFL stops. He weighed in 17.02 lbs. and on Toledo Bend he weighed in 15.04 lbs. In the Year to Date standings this puts David in 1st place with a total of 32.06 lbs. David’s pattern was a little different than the top 2 anglers. Grass, drains, ditches and the “old faithful” rattle trap played a big part in his big bag. That’s all the information he would share, but he would like to send out Hugs and Kisses to his fishing friends Sharon and Ric.

Co angler Keith Melton of Coushatta, LA.went home with a check for $2,179.00 for his 1st place win. Keith’s 5 bass limit weighed in at 17.10 lbs. Keith was using an All Star rod and a Shimano reel that was filled with 14# Stren line. His baits of choice were Big Bite Bait’s Sexy Melon plastic worm or a Ticki Stick in Watermelon Swirl and he was using them in 2 to 6 ft. of water around grass patches. Keith was so excited to say how happy he was to be in 1st place today because he zeroed on the first stop on Toledo Bend. “What a blessing this is” Keith stated. “A huge thanks to my pro angler, Richard Cunningham, for putting me on 5 quality bass”.

The 2nd place co angler Myron Sims of Quitman, TX wasn’t far behind with a limit of 15.12 lbs. Myron was bragging the evening before about having a good feeling going into this tournament. Senkos did the job for Myron in 3 to 8 ft. of grass. Myron caught his big bass that weight 6.13 lbs early that morning. This was a nice big ice breaker for him. “Thanks to my pro for helping me out” stated Myron.

The Big Bass winner on the pro division went to Dustin Robison of Anacoco, LA., he weighed in a Rayburn sow that topped the scales at 10.01 lbs. Co angler division was won by Bill Steptoe of Carthage, TX who weighed in his Big Bass that weighed 7.03 lbs. What a way to go guys!

Sam Rayburn Fishing Report for March 7

Water Temp.57

Normal pool 164.40

Water Clarity 2 feet

Sam Rayburn has continued to rise this week to 164.73 but is showing signs of slowing down. The water is still stained in the mid lake area.

Sam Rayburn turned hot this weekend as the water temperature jumped up into the mid 50 to 60 in some of the pockets. Lots of males moved up along with some females. Working around the brush with senko’s and Stanley spinner baits seemed to be the ticket to catch a lot of fish.

We must have caught 25 fish just moving around jumping from spot to spot not staying to long anywhere. Each pocket was a little different, some time the Stanley spinner bait did the best and others the senko’s did the trick. If the weather holds out the next few weeks will be awesome as some fish move up and stage on points before they move up to spawn.  The trap bite will increase as these fish stage in ditches and drains. Its looks like it’s going to be a lot of flipping in the buck brush.  Put on some good line and retie pretty often so if you hang into one of those big girls she won’t broke off.  Remember these fish are doing their thing to supply the lake with more fish for future fishing trips.  Handle the fish with care and get them back in the water as quick as you can.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and runs thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits.

Crappie; There have been a few crappie caught in the grass on the points off the main lake on traps. They are on the move back down the river but it will still be slow for now.

The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a spring crappie trip.

God Bless

Chris & Rusty Harvey Load the boat with over 28 LBS to win BassChamps!

Bass Champs Tournament Trails
Team Harvey blows past the pack to win Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn

East Region

by Bass Champs Staff Writer Patty Lenderman

(Mar. 01, 2010 - Umphrey Family Pavilion, Lake Sam Rayburn, TX)… Chris and Rusty Harvey stole the show with a 1st place win weighing 28.68 lbs February 27, 2010. Bass Champs East Region had their second event of five in the season at the Umphrey Family Pavilion seeing 269 teamed contenders. Weather elements are still jockeying, not all coming together at the same time for a highly anticipated season of catching big bass. Thirty eight teams shared in a 93% payback purse of over $65,000 in cash and prizes.

There has been a high anticipation in the air for weeks as anglers have been on the hunt for big sacks of bass. Water temperature and moon phase are two key elements that will kick off an explosion of big sows that have successfully eluded hooksets for months. On February 27th, the moon was coming up on full but continuous cold fronts is keeping the water temperatures of Big Sam in the lower 50s. Watch out - just a few more degrees and they’ll be moving on up! The contenders enjoyed a calm, bright day on Sam Rayburn Saturday, following heavy rains on Friday. There was no hurry for teams to come in to weigh, spending every last moment they could trying to catch a winning sack.

It took teamwork to haul the winning stringer up the hill to the tanks. Chris and Rusty Harvey had a monster sack of bass that blew the rest of the field out of the water! Their 28.68 lb limit stood unchallenged to win 1st place and $20,000. The team had narrowed their target points to two places, and stuck with their game plan. “We had a decent practice, and knew there were big fish in these areas.” They had some company from other boaters throughout the day, but held to their guns and stuck it out. “We were throwing rattle traps in 6’-8’ of water. These spots were close to deep creek channel swings with grass.” They managed four nice sized bass fairly quickly, but still had a three pounder near the end of the day. At 3:00 they made their last cull to their final weight. They would like to thank Ranger, Evinrude, Costa, Terry’s Marine, Falcon Rods and Big Bite Baits for their support.

Chris and Rusty Harvey landed 28.68 lb limit and stood unchallenged to win 1st place and $20,000.

The 2nd place team has been consistent in Bass Champs early spring events. “This is the third year in a row we’ve missed 1st for 2nd here in February or March!” Chris Clemmens & Dallas Cole had the second highest weight at 21.16 lbs. “We were planning on fishing deep outside grass,” the team began. “Initially we ended up finding them shallow” Using crank baits and rattle traps, the team had a small 15 pound limit by 10am. “We moved back out to deep water at main lake points and culled four times. We only went to three places today.” They were awarded $5,000 for their 2nd place finish.

Keith Caka and Charles Bebber secured 3rd place with 21.08 lbs. They brought in the first sack of the day over 20 pounds and had held lead position until the last flights came in. Going for the shallow bite, they used rattle traps and flipped Big Bite Baits Kriet Creatures in the bushes. “It was a spawning flat, about 3’-4’ deep” they explained. Estimating catching 15 fish to cull from, their last culls were around 2:30, getting rid of their last two 2 lb fish for a 3 and a 5 pounder respectively. The team won $3,000 for their 3rd place finish then doubled their money with the Skeeter Bonus program to a $6,000 day. They would like to thank Skeeter Boats, Just for Fun Watercraft Rental in Conroe, TX, Big Bite Baits, Costa, Power Pole, Dirty Jigs Tackle, Gullo Yamaha and Power Tackle Rods for their support.

There were four Big Bass over 9 pounds weighed in! Timothy and James Griffin had the biggest at 9.94 lbs to win $1,000. Mike Taylor and John Hunter brought in the second biggest at 9.32, followed by Clayton and Roger Boulware with 9.10. The last of the 9 pounders was weighed in by Kevin Burks and Jason Gates with 9.02.
