The 91st annual Chairman’s Banquet for the Jasper Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce opened to a packed house last Friday, Jan. 29.
Angel San Juan and his Channel 4 news crew surprised guests by showing up to film the chamber banquet as a shining example of a small city succeeding in a sagging economy. The show aired Saturday at 9 p.m.
Legislators Senator Robert Nichols and Representative Wayne Christian also showed up to honor area leaders and businesses who received awards for their contributions to that growth.
Jasper Mayor Mike Lout, who won last year’s Citizen of the Year award, drew chuckles when he said, “You think they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when they named me? Wait’ll I lay this one on you.”
He then named Bob Sealy as the new recipient of the citizen of the year award for creating the McDonald’s Big Bass Splash, the largest fishing tournament in the world and a business that brings millions to the local economy every year. Last year the tournament drew more than 100,000 participants. (The rest of this story can be found in the Beaumont Enterprise)

American Fishing Series Texas Division to host event on Sam Rayburn Reservoir
Pros will fish for a top award of $25,000 plus a 198VX Ranger boat with 200-horsepower outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met

Anglers will take off from the Umphrey Family Pavilion located at 5438 Rural Route 255 West in Sam Rayburn, Texas, at 7 each morning. Weigh-ins will be held at the Umphrey Family Pavilion beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
The Sam Rayburn Reservoir American Fishing Series tournament is being hosted by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Chamber of Commerce.
Pros will fish for a top award of $25,000 plus a 198VX Ranger boat with 200-horsepower outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award of $10,000. If the co-angler meets the Ranger Cup guidelines, they will earn an additional $5,000.
The American Fishing Series consists of four divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast and Texas. Each division will consist of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points that could earn them a trip to the American Fishing Series Invitational on Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Ala., Nov. 4-6. The points champion from each division will qualify for the 2011 Forrest Wood Cup and a fifth Forrest Wood Cup qualifier will advance from the Invitational that is open to the top 50 anglers from each division. (Entire story can be found at www.FLWOutdoors.com )
Over 300 anglers will hit the morning at day light to try to win either the Boater or Co-Angler division of this series. The tournament fishermen should not be surprised at the fact the weather will be cold and damp for most of the even as is the case in so many tournaments this time of year.
With the FLW Tour event on the Red River in Louisinana starting soon, it appears some of the Tour fishermen decided to jump in this seeing that they are only 2 hrs driving distance to each other.
Hemphill pro Tommy Martin and Chevy Pro Larry Nixon from Arkansas (formally from Hemphill) are in town trying to pad their pockets and resumes with a good finish this week.

Stump Restaraunt is ready to feed everyone before and after the tournament and even while it is going on!
