Water Temp.50

Normal pool 164.40

Water Clarity 2 feet

01-24-10

Sam Rayburn has dropped this week to 162.41 and that’s right at 2 feet low. We had some more rain above us and the lake level jumped up just a little from the rain.  The water has really started to get a lot of color from the rivers as they pull more water each day.

Sam Rayburn has been slow this week but we have managed to catch a few fish on traps and Stanley Spinner baits.  We caught them in the grass as they’ve started to move up slowly.  We have had several on that had some weight to them.  Darn things managed to pull loose after a short fight. These fish didn’t hit hard, the line kind of got heavy like you had grass on. You would notice that something just wasn’t right, and then they let go.  There have been a few fish caught around the grass on Senko’s. Things are looking up as the males start to move into the pockets looking for a place to spawn. The females will start to stage in places waiting for the perfect time to move in.  Look for some fish

to start working on points as they move back into the pockets.

Carolina and Texas rigged lizards are a great way to hang into some of

these fish. This is what spring time is about so don’t sit at home.

Get out and try to catch a few fish or hang around and enjoy the great outdoors with someone.

I got some nice pictures of some offshore structure on the New Lowrance StructureScan and have them loaded on my site. You won’t believe the detail on some of it. I got some of it recorded and added the video for you to watch. Check it out.  The video is a good size file and takes some time to download.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits.

Crappie; The Crappie are still slow because of all the rain and fresh water we have had in the last few weeks. This time of year you play with the wind as the fronts move through. Between the fronts there are usually a few days that the wind will lay down.  We do our best to get people out to enjoy the cool days and natural beauty of our lake.

The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get you trips booked for next year.

Shivers & Tibbits top over 265 teams at Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn

Shivers & Tibbits top over 265 teams at Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn
By: Patty Lenderman
(Story posted on Bass Champs website and written by Patty Lenderman of the Lake Caster)

Bass Champs East Texas Region kicked off their 2010 season on Sam Rayburn January 23, 2010. Weights were stacked tight, with four ties in the money line. Pete Shivers & Doyle Tibbits topped the field of 266 teams to win $20,000.

It looked like a perfect day to fish. Low pressure, overcast skies, a front on the way and temperatures reaching nearly 70 degrees. There were just two factors that made it tough.
Water temperatures are still in the lower 50’s, keeping the big sows in deeper water until the water warms a little bit more, and the overcast skies kept them roaming instead of hugging to cover. Eighty eight teams managed limits, but most of them were skinny.

Pete Shivers of Kirbyville, TX and Doyle Tibbits of Broaddus, TX brought in the heaviest sack to win the guaranteed 1st place purse of $20,000. “All we did was throw a rattle trap all day,” the team explained. Their morning started out very slow, and finding a fish to bite was hard. “We stayed in pockets throwing to about 4’-6’ of water, and probably hit around 15 spots. Lots of chunking and winding.” Gradually they boated their limit and before the end of the day culled three times to their final 19.12 weight, anchored by a 6.40 lb kicker.

There was a tie for 2nd place. John Salamone & Keith White weighed in a five fish limit at 17.58 lbs, and so did Timothy & James griffin, having only four bass in their bag. Salamone & White broadened the range of their fishing area, locating fish from 6’-28’ deep. “Mostly we found our fish in main lake ditches and drops,” Salamone reported. “We were using Gambler jigs tipped with Gambler Flappy Daddy’s and also caught some with rattle traps.” By 10:00 they had a limit in the boat, but it was small. “We probably caught 25 or 30 keepers today, and broke off on two that may have made a big difference for us.” Still a good payday, the team was presented a $4,000 check. “We’d like to thank Fun-N-Sun Boating Center, Legend boats, Mercury, Motorguide, Hi Seas Line, Am Rod, V & M High Tail Shad, and Mr. Mean spinnerbaits.

Father & son Timothy & James Griffin tied for 2nd with four bass at 17.58 lbs. “We fished up in the grass, and ended up with two on a rattle trap and two on jigs. It got rough for us out there, it just didn’t work out.” Their four fish did work out for a $4,000 payday!

Jason Gates brought in the Big Bass of the tournament weighing 10.24 lbs. Fishing with Kevin Burks, the team had four fish in their livewell, and at the time of this catch only had five minutes left to fish before heading in. Jason reports catching the fish on a ¾ oz Fire Tiger rattle trap on the edge of a drain in 8’ of water near the grass. They won the $1,000 Big Bass check to add to their 4th place overall winnings of $1,800 having a total weight of 17.26 lbs tying for 4th place.

Top Teams:
1st $20,000 19.12 Pete Shivers & Doyle Tibbits
2nd $ 4,000 17.58 John Salamone & Keith White
2nd $ 4,000 17.58 Timothy Griffin & James Griffin
4th $ 1,800 + 17.26 Kevin Burks & Jason Gates
4th $ 1,800 + 17.26 Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo
6th $ 1,300 17.20 Joe Mauldin & Tom Margraves
7th $ 1,080 16.44 Randy Deshamp & Jesse Draime
8th $ 1,065 15.98 Nathan Stroup & Eric Adams
8th $ 1,065 15.98 Pablo Torres & Jesus Vasquez
10th $ 1,050 15.60 Kris Wilson & David Harvey, Jr
and last in the money…
37th $ 600 12.26 George Jeane Jr & David Fox

Big Bass $1,000 10.24 Jason Gates & Kevin Burks
Skeeter Double Money $1,800 Rusty Clark & Cory Rambo

A total of $64,510 in cash and prizes was won by participants, but there was a lot of money left on the table. Chad Potts, President of Bass Champs reminded everyone – “Get online at www.BassChamps.com. Read the sponsor incentives – there’s a TON of money to win at every event!” Sponsor Incentive Programs that were not won:
Abu Garcia – If your team wins Big Bass using a Revo Reel, win another Revo Reel
Sure Life - $200 bonus if your team wins any team tournament and you have a Sure Life product in your livewells
Costa – Win Big Bass while wearing Costa Sunglasses on stage and earn an additional $200
Hooters – If your team wins Big Bass and you have a Hooters receipt dated within 30 days of the event, you will win a Free Entry Fee to the next Bass Champs tournament!

It is great to see more and more Junior teams participating in tournaments. Dads, grandpa’s, uncles, friends are picking up more kids as team mates, some as young as 6 years old. Bass Champs offers a great incentive to get more youth involved. Any team that consists of one adult and one junior, 15 years old or less, will be considered a “Junior Team”. Bass Champs will pay ½ of the entry fee for all Junior Teams. Each Junior Team is responsible for their annual 2010 membership cost, and the junior angler must be present and in the boat to receive the discount.

The next East Texas Region tournament will be on Sam Rayburn February 27th. Bass Champs will be heading to Lake Belton next to kick off the Central Region February 6. For more information click to www.BassChamps.com or call 817-438-3274.

Sam Rayburn has dropped this week to 162.68 and is still dropping.

The water had stared to clear up a little. Then they started to pull more water, so some places are getting off color again.

The water got really cold from this last front that dropped temperature into the teens at night.  The days didn’t get much above freezing and that helped keep the water colder than normal. The main lake got down to 42 degrees with the shallow pockets getting down into the 30s. We even had ice on the shoreline a couple of days.  We have seen very little bait or anything else in the pockets this week. The bite has been more than tough on all of us. The Trap bite has been nonexistent for us this week in the grass. The fish we have caught have been in 25 to 30 ft off humps and creek channels on Jigs and Drop shot rigs.  My best fish came off a long point; on a Nichols spoon; in about 27 foot. We’ve been marking a lot of fish suspended but have only caught a few of them when they move close to some cover. The weather will start to warm up this week and I look for some of these fish to move up, that will help the trap bite. I’ll try and get out before the weekend and give you an update on the fishing as the weather warms.  Look on my forum for that.  We will discuss a little bit about cold weather tips in the tidbit section.

I also got some nice pictures of some of the offshore structure on the New Lowrance StructureScan and have them loaded on my site. You won’t believe the detail on some of it. I got some of it recorded on the unit and put it on the site in some video so you can see the recording. Check it out. The video is a good size file and takes some time to download.

January info

Rayburn Country buyout was supposedly finished last Monday.  Construction on the Gold and Blue golf course is expected to to start soon.

Bass-N-Bucks is this weekend, good luck to all those involved

Bass Champs is next weekend I believe, again good luck to all those involved.

Real Estate Update, this is the most traffic I have seen looking at real estate during the winter months.  We have seeing very good amounts of traffic from people looking to buy property on or around the lake.  This is very good news for our East Texas economy.  The lake is just below a foot low which is great as well for this time of year.

Sam Rayburn has dropped this week to 163.07.  The water is starting to clear up some around the Attoyac and Angelina River.

First let’s say Happy New Year to everyone and boy it’s been cold.

This week it is going to warm up some and we are all glad to see that coming. I look for a few fish to move up and get more active as the sun warms the water. They have been slow this last week with some fish suspending off points and over open water making them hard to catch. I did manage to pick up a few fish on some structure.  It was tough to set there and soak the bait till one of them would pick it up.  I had a few small fish on Rattle-L-Traps but I look for that to change in the next few days. These fish will start to move in as the weather warms up.  Then they will drop back to the next edge when a front moves thru. This is what makes this time of year so good, a lot of big fish should be caught. There will be a lot of fish just sitting in the grass waiting for that perfect time to spawn. The males will be first to arrive with the female not to far behind.  Working the grass with lipless crankbaits is always the runaway top choice this time of year.

With these baits you can cover a lot of water and hopeful put a few fish in the boat. If the bite is off you may need to slow down and soak some plastic over the grass and around edges.  The deep bite has been the best for us in the last couple of weeks. Some fish are not

affected by the fronts as bad, but getting them to bite is tough.

After you get them stirred up you can normally catch a few of them.

I also got some nice pictures of some of the offshore structure on the New Lowrance StructureScan and have them loaded on my site. You wont believe the detail on some of it. I got some of it recorded on the unit and put it on the site in some video so you can see the recording. Check it out the video is a good size file and takes some time to download.
