Sam Rayburn has jumped up this week; almost a foot from the heavy rains; to 163.19. The water is still off color around the Attoyac and Angelina River.
Winter fishing on Sam Rayburn can be very challenging and this year is
proving to be just that. All of the heavy rains have dropped tons of
fresh water and really stirred things up. I’m not saying you can’t catch a trophy bass in winter because it’s been done more that once.
The grass bite has been on and off. Traps and spinner baits have still been catching a few fish. Covering a lot of water is the key to finding a few fish that will bite. These fish are cold so slow the bait down from time to time and that may help put a few in the boat.
There are a lot of fish in the grass and more will be moving up in the next few weeks. Get ready for some big fish to show up. Working the grass edges off points and drains in the coming weeks should produce some nice fish. They should start moving in for the spawn. We have caught a lot of good size fish this time of year as they move up to
staging areas. They move in early only to be pushed back by the next
front. That’s what makes this time of year almost magical, some days make you want to cuss then chunk your rods overboard while others are flat out awesome. Carolina and Texas rig on some of the drops and ledges will produce some fish and it could just be that trophy you’ve been looking for.
I did get out this week for a few hours and managed to pick up one nice fish on some offshore structure. She was full of eggs and leaked some on the deck. She will be looking for a nest before long. I also got some nice pictures of some of the offshore structure on the New Lowrance StructureScan. I hope to have them loaded on my site this week. You won’t believe the detail on some of it. I got some of it recorded on the unit and I am going to try to put it on video so you can see how darn cool it is.
Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits.

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has slowed down with all the rain and fresh water this week. This time of year you play with the wind as the fronts move through. Between the fronts there are usually a few days that the wind will lay down. Then we have some beautiful days to get out on the water and enjoy the fantastic fishing. If you aren’t in the mood to fish, kick back, relax, and tune into nature at its finest.
The new pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get you trips booked for next year.
God Bless

Sam Rayburn is still dropping hard and is at 162.44. The water is still off color around the Attoyac and Angelina River. The water temperature has dropped about 3 degrees this week and will continue to drop with the cold fronts pushing thru.
The shallow bite has been slow early in the morning, improving as sun warms things up some. Covering a lot of water looking for some active fish is the best thing to do. Traps and Stanley Spinner Baits are the baits that will do that for you. These fish are in small groups so keep that in mind. There are a lot of fish hanging on the outside of the grass line in 8 to 16 foot of water Working the edges and creek
channels with deep crank baits has been picking up some fish for us.
Working a Texas or Carolina rig around the edge of the grass and points has been snagging a few fish. Basically it’s been tough out there with the weather being a little cooler this week and the wind blowing most days. If you’re looking to catch that trophy bass this is the time to be out there fishing. So get the grab your cold weather gear and get out there.
Don’t forget Christmas is just around the corner and I have Gift Certificates for that someone special on you list. They are great for the guys who have everything. Guys this is something that you want to
let you wife in on. If you’ve been trying to come up with a way to
get here, this could be it. The Gift Certificates are good for one year so you’ll have time to work it into your schedule.
Lowrance Structure Scan is in the boat. I did get out for a few hours to see how things look. It has a great picture and shows a lot of different stuff. I found the old 147 bridge and I couldn’t believe the picture. I tried to get some pictures but the camera batteries died on me. I’ll try to get some this week and get them and some video to put on the website to let you guys sneak a peek. For the guys that want a good look and have been thinking about the Bass Class get your trips booked now.

Sam Rayburn is still dropping hard and is at 162.71. The water is still off color around the Attoyac and Angelina River. The water temperature has dropped about 5 degrees this week and will continue to drop with the cold fronts pushing thru.
I did get out this week, as cabin fever was setting in, and did a little fishing. I was just looking around and ran into a couple of
fish over 3 lb. One nice fish was over 8 lbs, not to bad for a day
on the lake by my self. One thing about it, the lakes don’t freeze over down here. Most of the time you can catch a few fish; even on the worst days.
The grass bite has been slow early in the morning but has improved thru the day as the sun warms the water up. Traps and Stanley spinner baits have been my top baits when working the grass. Work them slowly as the fish are lot slower to bite when things cool down. Working the outside edge of the grass has still been doing well with Crankbaits and Spinner baits. There are a lot of fish just sitting on the edges out there; getting them to bite is the tough part. Wacky worms and Texas rig have been catching some fish off points and ledges along with the Carolina rig. This is the time of year things get tough for a lot of folks. There will be a lot of days that it’s like you can’t do anything wrong and catch fish all day. Other days it seems all the fish have packed their bags and left “Big Sam”. If you could get a good look under the water you would see they are still there. You have to slow down and fish a lot slower and have a little faith. Don’t forget Xmas is just around the corner and I have Gift Certificates for that special person on your list, the one that has Everything. Guys this is something that you want to let you wife in on. If you’ve been trying to come up with a way to go fishin try this. The Gift Certificates are good for one year so you’ve got time to work it into your schedule.
Lowrance Structure Scan is out and I just got mine in. Should have it on the boat Monday. I’ll be getting out Tuesday to tune it in and see how good things look. I’ll try to get a few pictures and some video to put on the website to let you guys get a peek at things. For the guys that want a good look and have been thinking about the Bass Class get your trips booked now.

The fall fishing trip was won last week by Mark Thomas Crappie; The Crappie fishing has been fair this week. This time of year you play with the wind as the fronts move in. Between the fronts there are usually a few days that the wind will lay down. Then we have some beautiful days to get out on the water and catch a few fish.
We do our best to get people out to enjoy the quieter, less busy days on the lake.
