Water Temp.84

Water Clarity 2 feet

09-20-09

Sam Rayburn is just a little more than 4 feet low at 159.80 ft and the water temperature has been holding around 84 degrees. Water color is clear in most of the pockets, clearing more as you move south.

Sam Rayburn is still dropping slowly as they pull more water each day.

The showers this week has helped keep the temperature down.  Because of the showers we’ve enjoyed some nice days on the lake and even caught some pretty respectable fish.  Most of the fish came out of the grass on Ribbit frogs.  After a catching a few fish I started throwing Crankbaits and Stanley Spinner baits, picking up a few  fish just off the edge of the grass lines. There’s a lot of grass out there; some of it is out to 10 ft deep; and that gives the bass plenty of places to hide.  Most of the fish I found were in small groups.  Once I found them you could catch them like I just mentioned.  The trick worm was another good bait choice, on light Texas and Carolina Rig dropped off the edge of the grass. The fish are starting to setup in a few places.

Hopefully things are going to get better as it has been really tough most of the year. There have been a few fish caught on offshore structure on old monster worms and Football jigs.  I’ll be looking for some big fish to setup in a few places this fall and I can hardy wait to catch them.

I’ll have been drawing names but no one has won the free fishing trip for this fall.  Make sure to sign up  then keep checking for your name.

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has been a lot better this week.  We have been picking some up off the brush piles.  There is always one person who can out fish the other ones. Sometimes it’s all about feeling that soft bite.  Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade and the

changing room with the port-o-potty.   It makes the trip a lot nicer

for everyone. We can handle up to 8 anglers.

Rayburn Country Ladies Auxiliary

Our Rayburn Country Auxiliary begins our forty first year this September 24th. We meet monthly from September to April. Our luncheon meetings are held at the Rayburn Country Club usually the fourth Thursday of the month except for November and December. There are no meetings in November and December’s meeting date is usually the  first Thursday of the month.

We kick off this year with our annual style show whose theme is “how to look good and dress for less in today’s economy”. Our wonderful Ethel Richardson is chairman of this project with help from some of our members who will also model clothing from S&M Fashions of Beaumont and Port Arthur.  If you would like to join us, please call Sue Redding or Flora Wilhite for a reservation (409-698-9393 or 409-698-2289) . The cost of the lunch is $12 and a reservation is needed. You do not have to live in Rayburn Country or belong to the country club to join our Auxiliary.  Come join us!

Johnston Wins Sam Rayburn B.A.S.S. Open

Local Pro from nearby Hemphill Texas,  Stephen Johnston dominated for 3 days with a perfect game plan. Another local Pro from Jasper, Todd Faircloth ended up in second place just edging out the 3rd place angler by 2 ounces.

I personally wanted to say Thanks to both B.A.S.S. and all the tournament anglers who were here this week.  Be appreciate you having your tournament here and all that it brings to the area.  We hope you all come back soon.

Bassmater Open Day Two, Johnston still leads

Stephen Johnston thought he could catch around 20LBS a day and it looks like he knew what he was talking about.  He boated over 19#s on day two to keep the lead and widen the margin from the 2nd place angler.  The top three stayed the same with Hallman in 2nd and Faircloth holding on to third.  More guys seemed to struggle on day two but there were a few fishermen who climbed up the leader board by catching solid limits.  Dennis Fikes caught big bass of the tournament with a 9.9LB bass.  Final weigh is Saturday at the Umphrey Pavillion.

Rayburn Country property owner to vote on sale the golf course and amenities

All property owners were invited to Rayburn Hall last Saturday (Aug. 29) for a meeting in which the Rayburn Country Board members and the Rayburn Country Redevelopment group was going to inform property owners about the offer that was on the table to Rayburn Country from the Redevelopment Group.  Owners have now been asked to vote on the sale and the voting will end Sept. 18th.  If the vote passes (and many think that it will) then the current plans as explained by the RC Redevelopment group would be to spend approximately $5 million dollars redoing both the Gold and Blue Courses along with some revamping of the Green Course.  Remodeling the Club House and other structures  such as the motel, reception center, Rayburn Hall, etc…… and hopefully redoing the roads.  For additional information you can contact Mr. Gerald Cole, Board President at the Rayburn Country office (409)698-2444.  Many are speculating a lot of new growth in the Rayburn Country area.

B.A.S.S. Southern Open gets underway on Sam Rayburn

img_0670

After fishing time had come to an end on day 1 of the B.A.S.S.  Souther Open , local Ranger/Mercury pro and guide Stephen Johnston was on top of the leaderboard with 22 LBS on the Pro’s side.  Stephen is currrently in 15th place in the over all Southern Open Standings and should have a good chance to move up higher after this tournament.   The co-angler’s top spot is currently held by David Ozio out of Beaumont.  David is no stranger to Sam Rayburn, as a matter of fact he and his team partner are the 2009 Points Leaders in Bass Champs this year.  David weighed in 10.12 LBS with 3 fish. (Co-Anglers are only allowed to bring in 3 fish each day but the Boaters can bring in 5 keepers a day).

Although most of the anglers where not saying much on how they caught there fish, it seemed like patterns ranged from super shallow out to 30ft deep.  It was told to me that Stephen was quoted as saying that he felt like he could possibly catch another 20 lbs on day two but was not sure if he could do it 3 days in a row.  Local Pro Todd Faircloth came in with over 18 LBS and is sitting in the 3rd place possition. He is no stranger to big tournaments and no stranger to the winners podium on Sam Rayburn.

James Niggemeyer who won the first even on Toledo Bend earlier this year is sitting in 19th after day one.  I would imagine he is hoping to continue to climb the leader board so that he is sitting in good position to make the Classic heading into the final tournament at the Atchafalaya Basin in lower Louisianna later this year.

Water Temp.88

Normal pool 164.40

Water Clarity 2 feet

Sam Rayburn is still close to 4 feet low at 160.52 ft and the water temperature has cooled down to 88 degrees. Water color has been off in some of the pockets, clearing more as you move south.

Big Sam got some rain this week.   A front moved thru Friday night,

bringing enough rain to raise the water level and cool the water down some.  That got some fish schooling Saturday for us on the main lake.

They were small but we had a lot of fun catching them on a small crankbait. There are a lot of fish hanging around the grass flats and humps. Just finding a group and getting them to bite is the hard part.

We’ve been throwing a lot of plastic, from senko’s to old monster worms, working it across the grass and off the lily pads. It’s hard to say what colors work the best but Red Shad and Red Bug have been catching a few fish for us.  The creeks and ditches have been giving up a few fish in the 6 to 12 foot range off the edges with Carolina and Texas rigs. You really have to work to catch some quality fish and cover a lot of water. Working the edges has is a lot of work and the bites are few and far between but you have to stay with it. Crankbaits and Stanley Spinner Bait have been catching a few off the edges.  The Stanley Grass Jig worked around the edges of the grass from around 8 to 12 feet has picked up some nice fish.  Hopefully we have seen the last of the super hot days and the weather will continue to stay a little cooler getting these fish into their fall pattern. We really catch some good fish in the fall when they group up to chase shad in the pockets and creeks. Don’t set at home to long, hunting season will be here soon.  A lot of you guys will be out in the woods while the rest of us will be out here catching a boat load of fish. This is the time of year you can get on some really good fish.  Don’t wait to long to set your fall fishin trip.

I’ll be giving away one fall fishing trip in the next few weeks so make sure you are signed up on the site.

Crappie; The bite was been very light and that makes it hard on a lot of folks to feel the fish. Some folks have a natural knack for crappie fishin and generally catch the majority of the fish. We ended up with

36 Crappie and a few nice Catfish that made some nice fillets.

Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade and the changing

room with the port-o-potty.   It makes the trip a lot nicer for

everyone. It’s one way to get the kids out of the house and have some fun. We can handle up to 8 anglers.
