Sam Rayburn is close to 4 feet low at 160.52 ft and the water temperature has warmed up to 90 degrees. Water color has been off in some of the pockets, clearing more as you move south.
Sam Rayburn is still in good shape with the water level we have. One thing you need to remember, its been close to a year since Hurricane Ike came thru here with high winds that produced some pretty big
waves. Some were over 9 feet in height and downed a lot of timber.
These same waves also knocked a lot more off the shore and out of the mud. This timber is still moving around and as the water continues to drop you’ll find some new stickups in places that were clear before.
Use some caution running the lake. Every time I’m out I see someone
running thru the middle of the Amber Forest or the Black Forest.
Don’t trust everything you see. Lots of anglers run thru them and get a way with it. It will only take one time smacking a stump to make you understand they were running on luck.
Big Sam is a lot different this year and it’s been a lot tougher to put a pattern together. There are a lot of small fish in the grass flats that will hit topwater baits early and late and there are some good fish with them. The pads and Pepper grass are still holding some fish. Here is something that may help when you’re out fishing this stuff. Stanley Jigs will have a new hook out shortly that will improve the hookups when fishing the Stanley Ribbits. This will be a double hook that will still be weedless and get the job done in thick cover.
The hook will run thru the small part of the leg by the main body, then skinned back into the body to make it weedless. Just let a fish make a swipe at it and the fight will be on. It should be here around Oct. just in time for the fall fishing. After the topwater bite slows
down we’ve been moving out to fish the grass edges from 4 to 12 ft.
Pulling a senko or wacky worm off the edges and letting it sink has been working pretty good for us. The Stanley Spinner bait and a few crankbaits around the grass edges and creeks channels have also been turning a few fish. Be ready to get hung up and loose a few baits doing it. We’ve been picking a few fish up on Carolina and Texas rigs off some of the ledges and humps. These fish have been moving around
a lot following the bait fish so look for them to move. Summer will
be coming to a close and fall will be taking over before you know it.
The fish will be fattening up on shad as they move into the pockets.
This is the time of year that you can really get on some good fish so don’t wait to long to set your trip up for the fall fishing.
I’ll be giving away one fall fishing trip in the next few weeks so make sure you are signed up on the site.
Crappie; We got out Saturday with some good friends of mine and had a great time catching some nice Slabs. The bite was been very light and that makes it hard on a lot of folks to feel the fish. Some folks have a natural knack for crappie fishin and generally catch the majority of the fish. We ended up with 36 Crappie and a few nice Catfish that made some nice fillets. Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade
and the changing room with the port-o-potty. It makes the trip a lot
nicer for everyone. We can handle up to 8 anglers.

Sam Rayburn is at 160.80 ft and the water temperature has warmed up to
89 degrees. Water color has been off in some of the pockets, clearing more as you move south.
Bass fishing has been tough with a lot of fish burying in the grass and staying put. The few fish we have found have been on points with some grass around them. The early and late bite has been the best with topwater baits like Stanley Ribbit, Yellow Magic and Buzz Baits. After the morning bite slows down we’ve been moving to the outside edge, picking up a few more on soft plastics as they fall off the edge.
We’ve been moving real slow working the edges to find a few fish to bite. When we get a couple of bites we slow down even more and catch a few more in the area before moving on. If you can’t slow down then here are a few baits that will cover a lot of water and still pickup fish. Try a Stanley Spinner Bait or Crankbait worked off the edges and around a few of the humps out there. The deep bite has been slow on this end but you’ll still find a few spots that will give up a fish or two on the Carolina and Texas rig worms. There is some good grass out there and at times we have been able to pitch a 1 oz jig on the edges and get a few more fish. As the water continues to drop more fish will move to the outside edge and offshore structure. Keep an eye out for things to change in the next few weeks.
Crappie; The Crappie fishing has picked up some. The bite has been very light and that makes it hard on a lot of folks to feel the fish.

Sam Rayburn is at 161.21 ft and the water temperature has cooled down
to 85 degrees. Water color has been off in some of the pockets and
coloring up more as you move south.
The fishing has been a lot different this year and if you look at the
weather I guess that has been about the same way to with the
temperatures around here. The topwater bite has been spotty but if
you’re in the right place at the right time you can catch a few nice
fish. Grassy points have been holding a few fish early and late in
about 3 to 4 foot of water around the pepper grass. Stanley Ribbit
frogs got some action the other day as we worked our way around the
first point picking up 5 fish and we missed several more, I guess I’m
just getting slow on the hook set. As the bite slowed down we moved
out to 5 to 8 ft where the grass line dropped off. We ran a few
Stanley Spinner baits off the edge to catch a few more fish. This
outside edge can be worked with a lot of different baits from soft
plastics to crankbaits and jigs. The grass lines are very important
and there are a lot of them out there that are holding fish, getting
them to bite is the key. This time of year the grass jig is a great
way to work this edge. It isn’t for everyone but once you catch a few
fish doing it you’ll be hooked. Flipping a ½ to 1 oz jig all day
around the grass for a few bites can be a lot of work. If you’re
looking for big fish, that’s one way of getting one. The offshore
structure has been holding a few fish, Carolina and Texas rig Mag II
and Old Monster have been getting the most hits. Watermelon Red, Red
Shad, and Red Bug seen to be the best colors to start your fishing with.
Crappie; The Crappie fishing has picked up some. The bite has been
very light and that makes it hard on a lot of folks to feel the fish.
Someone in the group always seems to out catch the other folks.

Sam Rayburn is at 161.34 ft and the water temperature has cooled down
to 83 degrees. Water color has been off in some of the pockets and
coloring up more as you move south.
This week has been cloudy and rainy, the temperatures have been fairly
cool in the mornings and that’s been real nice for us to be out on the
water. The water has cooled down some 8 degrees in the last week and
the fish have been moving around a lot and will continue to move as
the weather changes. I’ll find a good group of fish only to have them
move in a few days. We caught some the other morning on Buzz baits
and Stanley Ribbit frogs off a point before the bite slowed down.
Then we moved out just few feet to start catching a few more on
senko’s and wacky worms. There are a lot of fish buried in the grass
and it’s been tough to get them to bite. The grass line can be
anywhere from 3 to 8 feet, the normal range, and some may go as deep
as 12 ft. We’ve been working a lot of different baits over the grass
and the edges. We’ve tried senko’s’, wacky worms and flukes to get
some of these fish to bite. Stanley Spinner bait and crankbaits have
still been picking up some fish in the grass just working the edges.
The pads and pepper grass has been holding a few fish. The Stanley
Grass jig has been pickup a few fish in the grass. The offshore
structure has been holding a few fish and will continue to do so as we
move in to August.
Crappie; The Crappie fishing has picked up some. The bite has been
very light and that makes it hard on a lot of folks to feel the fish.
Someone in the group always seems to out fish the other folks. I
watched one young lady show everyone how it was done. She did a great
job catching the Crappie. With a light touch on the rod she was
having fun, then she hooked into something a little bigger that a
Crappie. I got back there with the net ready to get a look at what she
had hooked into when the drag started singing. She tried to hand the
rod to me but I got her to hang on and play the fish out. After a few
minutes we got the first look at what she had. It was a big old blue
cat. After we netted it and got a few pictures we dropped it into the
spare ice chest.
Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the shade and the
changing room with the port-o-potty. It makes the trip a lot nicer
for everyone. It’s one way to get the kids out of the house and have
some fun. We can handle up to 8 anglers.
