Sam Rayburn is at 162.05 ft and the water temperature has been around
90 degrees. Water color has been stained up the rivers, clearing as
you move south.

Summer is here along with its long hot days. The early and late bite
has been the best as these fish start to set up on a top water bite
around the lily pads and grass.  The Stanley Ribbit frog is a great
way to get some of this action .If you haven’t seen the (New Buzzit by
Ribbit) this bait will get your attention and some fish. Something
about it draws them from under heavy cover.  Be sure you have some
good line and a heavy rod to handle it.  These fish have been holding
in small groups and once you find them you can have a lot of fun.  The
best fish have been holding tight in the hydrilla around deep water.
We’ve been catching them on Senko’s and Wacky worms just working the
bait slowly over the top then letting it fall off the edges. If that’s
to slow you might try a few crankbaits or spinner baits around the
edges to get a few of the more active fish and keep moving covering
more water. The deep bite has been picking up a few fish on Carolina
and Texas Rig big worms around structure and off deep ledges. This
time of year the fish can be very hard to locate and get to bite.
We’ve been bouncing a few Stanley Football Jigs over some of this
cover and getting a few good fish.

Crappie; The Crappie fishing is picking up some nice fish. Minnows
seem to be the best bait so far.  Everyone has loved the new pontoon
with the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty.   It makes
the trip a lot nicer for everyone. A fishin’ trip is one way to get
the kids out for some fun. Get your trip booked now and turn your kids
into fishin’ fanatics.  We can handle up to 8 anglers.  Are you ready?

(Jun. 22, 2009 - Lake Sam Rayburn TX)… Bass N Bucks East Texas Team Circuit began their 2nd Series. There were 115 teams that gathered at the Umphrey Family Pavilion for the first of 3 events. As always, there is the anticipation of catching a big sack of fish and doing well at the weigh in. In the 1st series, if you fish all 5 of the events, you qualify for the Championship. The 2nd series only has three summer events, which you can qualify for the Championship through. You have to fish with the same partner in all 3 events and only the top 20 teams in overall points get to go to the championship. The 2009 Team Championship will be held September 19th and 20th on Lake Sam Rayburn out of the Umphrey Family Pavilion. With that being said, as Dave let the first boat go at about 5:45 - the “friendly competition” was on!

The forecast for the day was clear and hot, with south/southwest winds 5 - 15 mph. One of those days when you pray that the wind won’t blow you off of your fishing hole but, also that your fishing hole is not out of the wind!

As usual, there were several anglers that did very well and the top teams recapped their days’ journey. The top 15 teams received a check with 3 places paid for the Ranger Cup Award.

Kris Wilson and David Harvey had a limit of 19.03 lbs. This placed them in fourth and also put them in the 2nd place for the Ranger Cup award, which added $1,000 to their winnings - making their total payout $2,500. They were punching the grass with a dark colored 1 ounce jig. Their limit was in the live well by 10:00. David said “I got really lucky today. I was working my jig in and it was out of the water. I saw a big fish coming out of the water chasing it, I dropped my jig down and lost sight of my bait, the fish had it!” Now this is a fish story! “Our 3 big ones were caught in the last hour of the tournament” stated Kris. The team was in Kris’ Ranger boat powered with a Yamaha. They would like to thank Falcon rods and Big Bite Baits.

David Truax and Mark Franks placed 3rd with their bag of 19.84 lbs. Their bag included a whopping 8.03 lb. bass that netted them Big Bass honors, they also won the 1st place Ranger Cup award which made their total payout $5,500. They were in David’s Ranger/Yamaha bass rig. “We ran shallow water today, watching for the birds. The birds were in the areas where there had been a Mayfly hatch and the willow trees were loaded with the flies and then that is where the bream would be” explained David. The team was casting a 1/2 oz. Mr. Blitz spinnerbait in 5 ft. grass around these willows. “We had our limit by 8:00 and I broke a good one off”, stated Mark.

Todd Littleton and Daniel Chambers came in 2nd with a five fish limit of 20.12 lbs., which earned them $3,000. “Our day started off great, the first cast netted us a 2 1/2 pounder. Then we ended up going to about 15 spots,” explained Daniel. The team was in Todd’s Champion/Yamaha bass rig and were flipping the grass line with a Black/Brown/Amber jig using a Paca craw as a trailer. “It’s always bad to get beat, but I think it is worse when you get beat by your brother. But, I taught him everything that he knows” stated Todd.

Donald Littleton and Shane Williams had an 11 lb. limit by 7:30. They culled up to their 22.43 lb. sack by 10:00 which gave them the winning sack of the tournament, this earned them $7,000. They were in Donald’s Triton/Mercury bass rig and were flipping the grassline with a Black/Blue 3/4 oz. Tru Trac jig trailered with a Paca craw. “We had a great day, I had a 7 pounder that jumped several times on the way to the boat and I got so excited one time when I was culling a 3 1/2 pounder for a 4 pounder that I put the fish back in the water with the cull tag still on it” stated Shane. The team wanted to thank Tru Trac jigs from Georgia, Triton boats and Mercury motors.

Sam Rayburn is at 162.21 ft and the water temperature has been around
89 degrees. Water color has been stained up the rivers and clearing as
you move south.

This week the early and late bite has been the best on topwater baits.
Yellow Magic’s, Pop-Rs and Stanley Ribbit Frogs have all been catching
some nice fish.  The pepper grass and lily pads are just a few areas
these fish have been hanging around.  We’ve been having some schoolies
popping up everywhere around the mid lake area to have some fun with.
Small crankbaits and Spoons are just a few baits these fish will go
after.  We also have some hydrilla out there that has been holding
some nice fish if you can get them to bite. The inside grass line has
been around 5 ft with the outside line running out as deep as 8ft. We
have been working a lot of different bait over these grass lines, here
are a few that have put fish in the boat for us. Crankbaits, Spinner
Baits along with a light Texas rig over the grass. Now for the guys
that just have to go after the bigger bite. Jigging the grass is
sometimes the only way to catch big fish in the summer months. When
the grass gets thick the bass use it to hide in, for shade and oxygen
as well.  They love to hide in it to ambush their prey. This grass can
be found thru out the lake around the shore line, off humps and ledges
on flats. This can mean miles off cover to hunt thru to find a group
that will bite.  Dropping a Stanley Grass Jig along the edges of the
grass and jigging it a few times before moving a few feet and dropping
it again is time consuming but when you find a few fish it can be
rewarding. There’s a lot of big fish caught each year on jigs. The
humps and ledges have been putting a few fish in the boat.  Dragging a
Carolina and Texas rig down the edges can produce a few fish.   There
are a lot of colors to work with. Here are a few to get you started,
Red Shad, Red Bug, Green Pumpkin and Water Melon Red.
Crappie; The Crappie have been moving out to the brush piles slowly
and we have been picking up some nice fish. Minnows seem to be the
best bait so far.  We are also catching a few catfish, some of them
are sure enough keepers. Just last week we hooked into a big flathead
that looked like it might run 20 lbs.  Whooeeeee that was a fight!
Just as we got him to the boat he pulled loose. That one would have
filled the cooler by himself. Everyone has loved the new pontoon with
the shade and the changing room with the port-o-potty.   It makes the
trip a lot nicer for everyone. Get your trip booked now for summer fun
with the kids.

25 LBS Wins $25K in Sam Rayburn Bass Champs East Texas Division

Fikes & Weppler dominate the pack at Bass Champs on Rayburn to win $25,000

By: Patty Lenderman
Skeeter Bass Champs East Region wrapped up the 2009 season with their last event on Sam Rayburn June 13. Not only were they fishing for a part of the $50,050 purse in cash and prizes, but it was a battle to the finish in points standings for the year. Larry Weppler & Dennis Fikes claimed a dominating win to take home $25,000.

The day was scorching hot, and anglers had a choice to make in picking their spots. There was a consistent breeze that offered relief from the heat but adding to a work out on the trolling motors. Or they could opt for calm coves, easier fishing and stifling heat. The bigger question was where were the bass?

Fikes and Weppler surmised that the quality bass they were hunting for would be hanging out in deeper, cooler water. They found a hump that came up from 45’ to about 20’. Throwing Carolina rigs, they quickly had a limit. “The fish were hanging around 28’. Once we put an initial limit together we started using jigs.” Estimating catching around 25 weigh fish to cull from, their five keepers just kept getting heavier. They landed their kicker around 10:30, having an official weight of 7.42 pounds. Having caught all of their fish in deep water, they packed it in early and was the first to weigh in. Their official 25.36 lb stringer set the mark for the rest of the pack, with the nearest challenger more than two pounds behind. They won 1st place and $20,000 and being the highest finishing team in a qualified Skeeter boat, the team received an additional $5,000. It pays to own a Skeeter! The team also won an additional $200 for having used the “Catch & Release product by Sure Life in their live wells. “We’d like to thank Skeeter boats, also George Cook of Geneva Tackle. He upgraded a lot of our gear and tackle which really made a difference.” They would also like to thank their other sponsors, Kistler rods, Shooter Flourocarbon, Sebile, Save Phace, Sun Line and Jackall.

Mike Michalec & David Ozio won 2nd place with their 23.16 lb limit. “It started out great,” Mike stated. “Our first three fish were six pounds each. Then (the bite) slowed way down.” They had targeted 10 areas near deep drops just off the river channel in 20-25’ depths. Using the new Rapala DT20 crank baits, they caught a limit and culled six times to their final weight. “We could have done better, but we lost two good ones.” They won $3,000 for their 2nd place finish, but ended up with the most overall points to win the Anglers of the Year race! “We’d like to thank our sponsors – Storm, Rapala, Suffix, MotorGuide and Triton.”

3rd place was won by Jason Wells & Vic Cooper with 22.52 lbs. Their morning started off fast and furious with a limit in the first 45 minutes. “Our first five keepers only weighed around 13 pounds. We had a long way to go.” Using Bomber Fat Free Shad crank baits and dragging Carolina rigs, they found some good fish at ledges dropping from 15’-25’. “After a while, that bite slowed down so around noon we headed to some grass beds, fishing with Booyah jigs and started getting bites again.” Before the end of the day they culled six times. Their biggest weighed 7.16 lbs, anchoring their 3rd place win. “We’d like to thank Hometown Tackle, Tri Lakes Tackle, Neuville Stone, Pradco, Shimano Rods & Reels, Champion and Mercury for their support.”

Stan and Steve Burgay weighed in the biggest bass of the tournament at 8.34 lbs to win $1,000.

Sam Rayburn is at 162.48 ft and the water temperature has been around
85 degrees. Water color has been stained up the rivers and clearing as
you move south.
The bite has been tough with the fish not sure where they want to be.
We caught fish up shallow and some out to 12 ft with a few as deep as
20 ft off structure. These fish have been in small groups and when you
find them you may catch 10 fish in one place. There has been a little
topwater bite on Stanley Ribbit Frogs over the pepper grass and pads.
When you are working the frogs try a few different retrievals.  I have
found that at times they like it to pause for a few seconds. I found
one day that’s the only way they would even hit at them.   Don’t get
stuck  in that old rut try new things. Senko’s and wacky are still
picking up a few fish around the edges of the grass.  Let me tell you
about a couple of other baits that I having been using when it gets
tough.  The first is from E2 Bait Company, I’ve been using some of
their 5.5 and 8inch needle worms.  These are really unique with the
needle like tail.  They can catch some fish. I used them on shake head
jigs along with Texas and Carolina Rigs and have quickly had a lot of
success with them. Now Kicker Fish Bait Company has a Hightail
Holeshot Worm that has holes in the tail that release air bubbles and
they really work.   I used them the same way with lots of success. If
you’ve got another way you’ve been rigging them please let use know
and we will give it a try. Now for you guys that cast and wind here is
you game.   Stanley spinner bait 3/8 put a nice 7 lb Bass in the boat
the other evening so don’t think they aren’t working. We’ve also been
running some crankbaits around the points and catching some fish. The
offshore bite has been tough and the bite is very light and small
worms have been the best.   I look for that to change as the fish move
out. So keep hitting that stuff. The Stanley Jig has picked up some
nice fish around the grass in the 6 to 12 ft range. This is not for
everyone and can be a lot of work but you can hook into some nice fish
if you stick with it.
Now for you guys that have been looking for a great deal on a boat!
Coolwater Boats closed down and still has the Phoenix boat.  That’s
the Beeline model with the 250 optimax fully loaded for $36,000. That
is a steal.  There are also several Aluminum boats in the yard. I’ll
get a list of them on the site in the next few days. The phone
#936-824-2262 is still good, just leave a message.
Crappie; We have had several families on the pontoon and they have had
a great time catching some fish and  enjoying getting out on the water
together.  One of the couples brought their little two year old girl
and we had a great time with her.  There wasn’t any way to get her to
touch the fish. When her battery ran down she got her a nap under the
shade. So grab the kids and get in on the action.  The Crappie are
moving out to the brush piles and we have been catching quiet a few of
them off the new pontoon.  It’s really nice to have a lot of room to
move around and plenty of places to sit, relax, and enjoy the day.
There are a lot of fish that are just under the limit being caught and
released to fight another day.  The new pontoon boat can handle up to
8 anglers. There is also plenty of shade to get under to break the
heat of the sun. We have a changing room with a potty for those times
of need. So grab your friends or family and come out and have some
fun.  School is out so book a trip with the kids.
The Bass Class on the water, I offer this class year ’round to help

Can you believe a front this time of year?  Boy, just when you thought
you had something going the weather changes! Friday we had a little
pretournament trip to do. We got out a little late as the client was
late getting in the night before. I had two solid groups of fish that
weren’t going anywhere. On our first stop we started working our way
into where that group had been hiding.   About the third cast; BAM; a
fish took the bait bringing it to the side of the boat keeping it low
and out of sight.   I shake the bait lose and drop the fish back in
the water.  The client was looking on and saying that it was a good 6
plus.  With a grin we picked up and made a short move to our next
spot. Spot two was running about the same pattern.  As we moved up to
where they had been laying; BAM; we picked up one that went about 3
lbs. Not bad for about 30 minutes of fishing. The early bite is very
important this time of year so don’t waste your time. The top water
bite had slowed down when the front came in and I only had a few short
hits on topwater with no hook ups.  There are a few fish up shallow
around the buck brush that you can catch flipping senko and wacky worm
up close to them. The grass line has been giving up a few fish with
the same baits. This grass has been sitting from 4 to 8 foot in most
of the places. I have been catching a few fish on Stanley Spinner
baits along this edge and the edge of the lily pads. These fish seem
to be holding on the edges of things like ledges, creek channels and
lily pads. Seems like covering a bunch of water is the biggest key
here.  Once you find a few fish, slow down and work the area over with
a light Carolina rig and small bait. There are a few fish that have
moved out on the offshore structure but the bite has been very light
for the most part this week. I look for this bite to get stronger in
the next few weeks.
Crappie; We have had several families on the pontoon and they have had
a great time catching some fish and just enjoying getting out on the
water together.  One of the couples brought their little two year old
girl and we had a great time with her.  There wasn’t any way to get
her to touch the fish. When her battery ran down she got her a nap
under the shade. So grab the kids and come out and get in on the
action.  The Crappie are moving out to the brush piles and we have
been catching quiet a few of them off the new pontoon.  It’s really
nice to have a lot of room to move around and plenty of places to sit,
relax, and enjoy the day.  There are a lot of fish that are just under
the limit being caught and released to fight another day.  The new
pontoon boat can handle up to 8 anglers. There is also plenty of shade
to get under to break the heat of the sun. We have a changing room
with a potty for those times of need. So grab your friends or family
and come on out and have some fun.  School is out so book a trip with
the kids.

Sam Rayburn Fishing Guide Report by Roger Bacon

– 5/22/09 Well, I guess summer is officially here. Water levels were holding at about 7 foot low a couple of months ago. But with all the rain, Big Sam is almost back to pool level and the bass have spawned out and are doing their typical summer deal. Shallow on the topwaters early and late, and holding on outside grasslines and brushpiles during the heat of the day. First for the shallow bite. When the water came up, it flooded a lot of bank grass and pepper grass that was holding along the bank line. This grass is now in about 4-6 feet. This is perfect depth for fishing topwaters. Although, the Yellow Magic is my favorite topwater, and I’ll never hit the lake in the summer without it tied on, fishing the heavy grass with an open hook bait can be tough. So if I can’t get em to hit the Yellow Magic on the edges, I pick up a weedless topwater such as a Big Bite Baits Top Toad. The toads are a blast to fish, but just a few helpful hints here. Use heavy line, preferably Braid or Flourocarbon due to their lack of stretch. A heavy, long rod is must as well. I have a lot of guys give up on the surface toads because they miss so many fish. As hard as it may be, don’t swing when you see them blow up on it. Just drop your rod tip and wait. The bass will usually hit it from behind, push slack, and you won’t know if they’ve got it till they swim off. If they miss it, letting the bait fall on a slack line will get you a lot of follow up bites as it sinks into the grass. In either case, when you do feel the weight, hammer em hard and crank em out of the veggies. Once the sun gets up it’s time to move to offshore hydrilla lines. If it’s overcast, try the inside lines in about 5-8 feet. Short, light Carolina rigs with a 4 or 6 inch Finesse Worm, Kriet Kreature, or 6 inch Pro Lizard will all get your string stretched. I go with variations of watermelon or green pumpkin when they are in this shallow pattern. If that doesn’t work, and especially if the sun is bright, move on out to the outside grassline in 12- 15 feet. Out on the outside grass lines I seem to have better luck with darker colors. Redbug, Junebug, Back Neon, and Black/Blue work well. As far as rigs, a 6 or 10 inch Texas rigged Kriet Tail worm is hard to beat. Jigs follow as a close second, a Carolina rigs will work well too. I’ve been playing with the dropshot and shakey head a lot the past 2 years and they will flat put fish in the boat. Granted, you might catch a bunch of Spotted bass and small Largemouths, but the big girls will bite them as well. I usually use the Kriet Squirrel Tail worm or the 6 inch Finesse Worm on my shaky heads and drop shots. Both of these lures are made by Big Bite Baits and they come in a large selection of colors. As most know, my bread and butter in the summer is brushpile crappie. We seem to have had a late crappie spawn this year as a lot of the fish my clients are cleaning still have eggs in them as I write this. Usually by late May, the spawning bite over the hydrilla is a memory and the big crappie will be piled up on the deeper drops. This is still the case, but instead of 75-100 keeper fish outings, were boxing 40-70 on a 5 hour trip. I think that June and July are gonna be off the hook on the brush. Live shiners are the best bet for a meat haul but a 16th ounce jighead with a plastic curl tail will work too. For jig trailers in clear water I like natural colors, Pearl glimmer, Arkansas shiner, or salt and pepper. In dingier water, I’ll switch to something a little louder like Pink/White, Chartreuse/White or pink/chartreuse. I have about 10 days left available on the pontoon boat for July and quite a few in August and Sept. I am running a new pontoon this year with more room and it is laid out for specifically for fishing. If you wanna book a trip or just talk fishing, gimme a shout at 409-FRY-FISH, 409-379-3474. 24.9 LBS Wins Bass-N-Bucks on Sam Rayburn

Bass-N-Bucks
Cherry & Elliott triumph on Rayburn as Bass N Bucks wraps up 1st Series
Pete Elliott and Danny Cherry surged ahead of the pack with a 24.95 lb limit. Accounting for nearly half of their weight was their 9.54 lb kicker. “We had a good day. Danny had done some pre-fishing and found a few on a point. That’s where we started. Just had a gut feeling about it.” Using Texas rigged brush hogs, their fish were stacked in the grass 10 - 12’ deep. Listening to their gut paid off, and they began catching fish right away. Their third fish was their kicker! “We had a 20 pound stringer by 8:00, and only culled twice after that. By 10:00 we were done. Tried a couple of other areas, but didn’t catch anything else to use.” They won the guaranteed 1st place purse of $15,000. Their kicker earned Big Bass honors and another $1,000. Fishing out of Pete’s Ranger boat, they also won the 1st place Ranger Cup contingency money for an additional $2,500 adding up to a $18,500 day! “We’d like to thank Texas Marine, Ranger, Yamaha, Castaway rods, Mr. Blitz and Hummingbird electronics.”

Jason Wells and Vic Cooper made a good run for the money with a 22.61 lb limit. “Our plan? Getting out of the office!” It was a good plan - and it paid off with a 2nd place finish. “Vic caught all of our fish today. We only went to one spot, a ledge, and used Carolina rigged Yum Dingers and Bomber Fat Free shad crank baits.” Their fish were fairly deep, in 15’-20’ of water. “(Catching fish) started on the first cast and just kept going from there. Our best cull was trading a 3 1/4 lb. bass for a five pounder.” They received $2,500 for their 2nd place finish and would like to thank Hometown Tackle, Pradco Lures, Shimano rods & reels and Tri Lakes Tackle for their support.

Nineteen places were paid, with Gary Baker and Jason Dew receiving the last $500 check for their 15.69 lb limit.

Water Temp.79
Normal pool 164.40
Water Clarity 2 feet

Sam Rayburn is at 162.82 ft and the water temperature has been around
82 degrees. Water color has been stained up the rivers and clearing as
you move south. They will continue to pull the lake down to prepare
for the Hurricane season so plan on the lake to continue to drop.
This week we have had a couple of fronts move thru that have changed a
few things up. The schooling fish have slowed down some as has the top
water bite that was just getting started. Not to say you can’t catch a
few on frogs and yellow magic’s early around the pepper grass and lily
pads. These fish have just moved back a few feet and have slowed down
about chasing anything moving real fast. This can change so don’t be
fooled if they start to chase this week. For some reason fish don’t
read everything that has been written about what they should be doing
this time of the year. There has been an early morning bite around the
points that have grass. The Stanley Ribbit frog pulled over the pencil
grass has been picking up a few fish.  So has working a spinner bait
on the edges out to about 8 ft around the grass and lily pads. We’ve
been picking up a few fish on offshore structure on Carolina rigs and
Stanley Football jig.  It’s been slow and the bite can be very light
so don’t miss one.  Most people feel the bump and think it’s a bite
and really it’s the fish dropping the bait. Big fish have a way of
sucking the bait in with out giving you any kind of sign that they’ve
got it till it’s to late. If you’re getting this kind of bumps and not
catching the fish, you may not be feeling the bites in time. These
fish are hard to catch and a good rod will make a big difference in
the way things feel. American Rodsmiths Team Series Rods can make a
big difference in feeling these bites. Spool it up with some
fluorocarbon line for better sensitivity.  I’ve been using the PLine
floroclear  20 lb test on my rods and have been using it for over a
year now. Hey’ don’t take my word for it, try it yourself. With all
line try different knots ’till you find the one that works the best
with that line. There will be a lot of fish using points and offshore
structure so get ready for some deep bites.
