Water Temp.70
Normal pool 164.40
Water Clarity 2 feet

Sam Rayburn is at 162.55 ft and the water temperature has been around
70 degrees. Water color from clear to muddy or heavily stained in
places.
Big Sam has gotten a lot of water from the rain in the last month and
has risen 3 feet. What this means; there is water in the buck brush;
the fish have moved in and are scattered in it. Getting in there is
the hard part. You have to do a lot of pitching with soft plastics and
small jigs to get back in there. You would think it was spring all
over when you run across these fish. The pads are just coming up in a
few areas and have started to draw a few fish.  They will continue to
improve as will the top water bite. The New Stanley Buzzit Ribbit
should get you started catching some of these fish. With the water
coming up so fast the grass lines will change quickly with some
vanishing in a few days and continuing to grow in others. The grass
patches can hold a lot of fish. Running a Crankbait over the grass
could get a few of them to bite.   If they are buried up in the thick
stuff you have to go in and get ?em.  A Stanley Grass Jig ½ to ¾ oz
seems to be the normal weight.  Using a short pitch in any holes
around the edges and work you way in.   This is a lot of work and may
not be for everyone.  If you ever catch on to it; you not only hook
fish; you get hooked as well. Make sure you?ve got a good rod here to
pull these fish up and out of the grass. If you don?t have one, take a
look at the American Rod Team Series and pick one that has some back
bone. Don?t forget the line.  It?s the link that has to hold.
While I was at the Big Bass Splash Tournament,  I had the pleasure of
meeting Ronnie Parker Owner, CEO of Lake Fork Trophy Lures. Ronnie had
some new line we demonstrated and it beat up on the other brands we
tried.  I was amazed at the difference in this new line.  The
FluoroHybrid FH is great and I will be putting it to the test in the
next few weeks.  It beat my old line hands down. You can check out
this line at LFTlures.com.
I want to thank Jay D Schurz, President of El Grande Lures and Allen
Teer, Pro Staff Team Leader, for accepting me into their organization.
We will be putting these lures to the test on Big Sam and I expect
to see some good results from the clients.  Make sure to check these
baits out on El Grande Lures website.
Allen Teer demonstrated some of the new lures in the tank at the Bass
Splash.  His demo brought lots of anglers to the Needmore Tackle
display and they sold out of all their El Grande lures.

Crappie have been moving from the grass to the Brush pile and back
this week making it tough. The ones that have been in the grass have
been hitting good as long as the water doesn?t get muddy from the
winds or rain. I look for them to improve in the next few weeks.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run
thru April 30th. If you haven?t heard, it encourages anglers who
caught a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the
TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this,
and one of them is getting a full color, life size, fiberglass replica
of the bass. (October 1-April 30 only)  If your fish meets the
requirements listed above, call their toll-free, 24-hour pager at
1-888-784-0600 or (903) 681-0550.Check out the Program rules
If you haven?t heard about The Bass Class on the water check it out on
the website and give me a call. Come have fun, learn some tricks and
then take your friends fishin.
Big D Outdoors is the place to get your boat ready.  Now, what are you
waiting for?  Give them a call 409-769-3700.

Dean Coleman & David Hall Win the Anglers Quest Rayburn Saturday Series #4

Angler\’s Quest
Dean Coleman & David Hall WIN!!

Anglers Quest Rayburn Saturday Series #4

This 4th Rayburn Saturday series event of 2009 began at safe light, which was 6:35 am. Weigh in was conducted at 3:15 pm. This event after all 9 events will provide the Team Anglers of the year with free entries to all 2010 Rayburn Saturday Series events. The Top 25 teams in pounds will qualify for the 2-day Championship in October on Sam Rayburn. A special Top 5 group of teams will qualify to go to the “Tournament of Champions” to be held on November 14-15 on Lake Bob Sandlin and will have a Great payout as normal. All Anglers Quest Championships include Calcutta auctions which builds the Championship purse to some very nice $$ to fish for, for a small entry fee of $155.00 per team. Sam Rayburn water was in good shape and about 3 feet below normal pool level with water temps running 64-66 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a slight breeze and 55 degrees with a warming to 74 degrees by weigh in time. The fish catching was good on Big Sam today as there were 26 limits brought to the scales, for a total of 148 bass at 328.67 lbs making the average bass brought to the scales today weigh 2.22 lb.

The team of Dean Coleman from Humble, Tx & David Hall from Montgomery, Tx ran Dean’s Ranger/Yamaha bass rig to Harvey & Pophers creek areas with 1-4 ft patchy grass to catch their bass pitching flukes & senkos on their Kistler LTA rods with Shimano reels. They had a limit of keepers in the boat by 11 am and culled 1 time by 3 pm to finish in 1st place with a sack of 18.32 lbs and collect $1620.00 for their day on the water.

Daniel Metreyeon from Port Arther, Tx & Jeremy Reeves from Bridge City, Tx ran Daniel’s Champion/Mercury to north lake Harvey creek area around Hog & Indian creek to fish ditches, drains & a drop off in 3-10 ft with grass. They used their Castaway Rods/Shimano reels to boat 15-20 keepers throughout the day to finish in 2nd place with a limit of 5 bass at 16.19 lbs. They took home $880.00 for their day on the water.

The Brothers team of Clint West from Orange, Tx & Clay West from Lumberton, Tx ran their Skeeter/Yamaha bass rig to north main lake on a milk run to various places throughout the day to finish in 3rd place with a total of 5 bass at 13.21 lbs fishing with lipless cranks & spinner baits around scattered grass. They took home $700.00 for their day on the water.

Bubba & John Frazier ran Bubba’s Nitro/Mercury bass rig to undisclosed lake areas to probe the lakes terrain and bring in 5 bass at 12.90 lbs to garner 4th place and collect $435.00.

The Big Bass of the Tournament was brought to the scales by the team of John Salamone & Josh Guy. They finished in 6th with 12.51 lbs. Josh caught the lunker 6.72 lber on a V&M Hula Grub with his American Rodsmith rod from the Legend/Mercury/Motorguide equipped rig.

Sam Rayburn Guide Fishing Report by Lynn Atkinson

Water Temp.66
Normal pool 164.40
Water Clarity 2 feet
04-12-09
Sam Rayburn is at 161.23 ft and the water temperature has been around
66 degrees. Water color from clear to muddy or heavily stained in
places.
The water color has been the biggest thing to deal with.  The south
side got hit with some high winds early in the week then the wind
shifted and churned up the north bank the next day. What does that
have to do with fishing? If you have clear water that gets muddied up
the bite can really taper off. I?m not saying you can?t catch some
fish in the area but it can have an effect on the bite. When you limit
their sight they will rely on their other senses to find food. That?s
where the Stanley Spinner Baits have put some good fish in the boat
this week. Slow rolling this bait over the grass and dropping it off
the edge of the grass and ledges has really been working for us. Early
morning has been the best but with a little cloud cover it can last
all day.  White and Gold bream have been two of the best colors.  With
the water coming up from the rain to our north these fish have been
scattering out. There will be an inside grass line in about 3 foot of
water and the outside line running out to around 8 foot. The grass
lines will be changing as the water continues to rise over the next
few weeks.  There are a lot of fish that are buried in the grass and
working a light Carolina Rig off the edge has been getting a few of
them to bite. We?ve been using some of the Hag?s Tornado Baits this
week and found that they work well over the grass. These baits have a
lot of action in them and have a rattle chamber in the tail so you can
insert a rattle.  Watermelon Red, Watermelon Candy and Watermelon
Chartreuse have been the best colors. You can pick some of these baits
up at Needmore Tackle in Jasper or Bass Strike Tackle in Zavalla.
There have been a few fish on offshore structure.  If you want to
battle the wind these baits may just be the ticket. Good luck and hope
you catch the big one.

Crappie had started to bite in the grass.  I look for it to pick as
the weather warms up. We?ve been getting a few crappie off the brush
piles and it should only improve in the next few weeks.

22.65 Win the Bass-n-Bucks on Sam Rayburn

Bass-N-Bucks
Castledine & Broussard takes 1st place at Bass N Bucks on Sam Rayburn

Many limits were brought in, many consisting of “swimmers”. Slowly, as the procession of anglers crossed the stage, the weights continued to increase. Troy Reed and Albert Collins weighed the first sack over 20 pounds to take the lead with 21.81. Brian Branum and Bill Rogers, having won consecutive tournaments the weekend before, closely challenged the leaders with 21.22 lbs. Near the end of the weigh in Todd Castledine and Brent Broussard brought in their creel to overtake the lead with 22.65 lbs and win the tournament.

“It started out pretty good for us” Castledine stated. Using a senko style lure from Excite baits, “we caught two pretty good ones right off the bat. The rest of the day we site fished.” They stayed near a big creek with grass in 4’-6’. “The beds are still active. They have a long way to go before they’re done.” Another bait of choice was a Strike Pro Flex Craw. By 9:00 they had their initial limit, estimated at 11 pounds, and started culling. “I’d say we culled six fish. The last one made all the difference, pushing us from about 20 pounds to 22.” Giving thanks to the Lord for their day on the water, they also appreciate their sponsors, including Strike Pro, Excite baits, Castaway Rods and Ranger Boats. They were fishing out of Broussard’s qualified Ranger boat and received the 1st place Ranger Cup bonus of $2,500. During the past year Brent Broussard had also purchased tires from Tiremax so he additionally received the Tiremax Bonus of $1,000.

Being in the lead until nearly the end, Troy Reed and Albert Collins ultimately took 2nd place with their 21.81 lb limit. It included a 7.97 lb kicker. Going into the day, their game plan was to cover a lot of water inside grass lines at 3’-5’ deep. “We caught our first two on swim baits.” Staying in two big areas all day, they had a limit by 9am, about 13 pounds, and made their last cull at 1:45 trading a 2+ pounder for a 5 pound bass. “Most of our fish were on the windy side. We’d like to thank Mr. Blitz, he helps us out with baits a lot.” Bass N Bucks presented them with a $3,000 check.

After a winning streak the weekend before Bill Rogers and Brian Branum saw no reason to change tactics. They went to the same areas and used the same Gambler red shad Flappy Jr craw that had given them previous success. They won 3rd place and $1,500 with a 21.22 lb limit, and were the 2nd place Ranger Cup winners for an additional $1,000. They would like to thank Gambler Lures, Pure Fishing, Advertising Visuals and Ranger Boats.

The two biggest bass of the tournament were only 5/100 of a pound apart in weight. The biggest weighed right at 8.50 lbs caught by Bill Wilcox fishing with Greg Christian. They won $1,000 for their big bass and finished in 14th place overall for an additional $700. Shelby Shaw and Chris Schultea brought in an 8.45 lb sow that just missed big bass honors.

Sam Rayburn is at 161.00 ft the water temperature has been around 66
degrees thru the week.  A  front came thru dropping the temperature
back down to 60 again. The water has been clear in some of the pockets
but murky for the most part in most of the larger creeks and up the
river.
This week has been tough.  A few good fish were caught right before
the front hit, then it slowed down after.  We?ve been catching some
fish on Stanley Spinner Baits on cloudy days early.  Then we?re going
to a small Texas rig worm or brush hog when the sun comes out.
There?ve been a lot of small fish in the pockets. As the sun comes out
the spinner bait bite dies and it gets even harder to get a bite. The
whacky worm was pulled out and we start working the edge of the grass
to pickup a few fish. We?ve seen a few fish running in the shallow
pockets but for the most part it looks like we are in a post spawn
mode. This means that for the next few weeks fishing will be slow.
There will still be a few fish that come in late so keep an eye out
for them. With the water coming up from the rains up north we should
start to have a deep bite starting. Look for these fish to move out
and setup on offshore structure and ledges in the next few weeks. The
Carolina and Stanley Foot Ball Jigs will come into play as the fish
get back to normal.
Crappie had started to bite in the grass before the front. That front
slowed everything down again. I look for it to pick backup as the
weather warms up. We?ve been getting a few crappie off the brush piles
and it should only improve in the next few weeks.

Big D Outdoors is the place to get your boat ready now. The spawn is
getting closer by the day..  So, what are you waiting for?  Give them
a call 409-769-3700.

God Bless
