Water Temp. 57
Water Clarity 2-3 feet
02-08-09
Sam Rayburn is at 157.98 ft the water temperature has been around 57 degrees. The water has been clear in some of the pockets. Some of the points and shallows are murky from the winds we have had this week.
The warmer weather this week has got some of the pockets into the high 50s to 60s causing some male fish to move in and start making a few beds. They haven’t locked on them, just getting a few places ready. It’s just the start of what’s to come. There should be a few females moving up this week with the same thought in mind. This past week we have seen several 8 and a 9 lbs caught in shallow water. The males will continue to move in first, with the females not to far behind. This is just the first of many waves to move up. This will continue till the next front moves in and cools the water down a few degrees. Now there will be a lot of fish in the grass and in the shallows. A few baits that come to mind are weightless Senko’s, Flukes and Lizards. Pulling them across the grass is a good way to pickup a few fish. You can also work a wacky worm over the grass letting it drop into any holes. A bandit crankbait in chrome, white and chartreuse worked around the edges should pickup a few fish also. The Spinner Bait bite has been picking up this week with a few caught off a Stanley 1/2oz Wedge Plus in White Flake with double willow blades. The Rat-L-Trap bite has been picking up a few fish and should get better in the next few weeks. Rayburn Red, Cherry Bomb and Toledo Gold would just be some colors to look at. Now for the deeper fish that will moving up to the stage areas. This is where you’ll have to fish a litter deeper off points and drops. Carolina and Texas rig comes to mind dragging them across the bottom over structure. E2 Baits make some great lizards that are excellent. The Bobtail is one that gives the fish something different to look at and triggers them to bite. One Bait that is a must this time of year is the Stanley Foot Ball Jig I won’t leave home with out it. I’ve seen it take a slow day and turn it into one of my best days ever this time of year. I had a young man fishing a dark spot in about 3 ft of water about 3 times before he tossed somewhere else. I asked him if he was thru with that spot and he said yep nothings there. Well my first pitch came back with a 4 lbs bass. After fishing a few more dark spots and picking a bass off each one of them he grabbed a jig and went to catching fish too. I made a believer of him. I used a 1/2oz in shallow water and went to a 3/4oz in water that was 6 to 8 feet deep. Black/Blue in stained water and Green-Pumpkin/Chartreuse. As a trailer I have been using a Berkley Chigger Craw. I hope this has helps you some.

Checkout the details and get things going your way. Get your lodging booked now then take a trip on the lake to find where you just might catch a prize winning bass.. Good Luck to everyone.
Remember this is the time of year that a lot of Trophy Bass are caught, If you catch one make sure you take good care of her. Get her weight, measurements, and pictures then get her back in the water. Having a replica made is the best thing to do as it will out last the real thing and look just like her. Besides, now you can go back and try to catch her again next time you are out. If we don’t take care of the Big fish we have now, who will?
We have been catching a few Crappie around the brush piles and around the bridges. There are still a lot of fish up river waiting on some much needed rain. We are booking trips for the springs so don’t wait to long. Round up your friends and get your trip booked. We can handle up to 10 anglers on the pontoon.
If you haven’t heard about The Bass Class on the water check it out on the website and give me a call. Come on down and learn some cool tricks that will help you catch fish on any lake.
Big D Outdoors is the place to get your boat ready now. The spawn is getting closer by the day.. So, what are you waiting for? Give them a call 409-769-3700.
God Bless

Water Clarity 2-3 feet
02-01-09
Sam Rayburn is at 157.90 ft the water temperature has been around 51 degrees. The water has been murky is some places from the winds that have been blowing for most of the week.
This week we have seen the water drop back down to the low 50s to 49 in the back of some of the creeks. The fish have moved out to the next drop and suspended over the points. It is normal this time of year to have the fish move in after a few days of sunlight warms the back of some of the creeks. These same fish move back to a staging area when a front moves thru. We’ve seen a lot of fish suspended in places so it won’t be to long before some of them sneak in. If you can find a pattern that works you can catch some good fish. If you catch one of the days where the water has warmed up I would look at throwing some soft plastic up shallow around the grass. This is the time of year that a Watermelon Red lizard comes to mind; bass hate them. Work them over the top of the grass slow and let them fall off the edge and sit there a few seconds. If that doesn’t get them, change colors, change baits, go to a Senko’s, Flukes, Baby Brushogs. Do something. If you’re not getting any bites change location, move out to the next drop, try 4 to 8 ft. Throw a few Rat-L- Traps, speed them up and them slow them down till you are just bumping the grass. You have got find what they want. Throw a few Crankbait and Jeckbait around the area, try a stop and go retrieval. It’s hard to say what will set them off. If that’s not working then back out some, move and get a Carolina rig out. Work it over some structure in 10 to 18 ft off points and drains. Lizards, Big Worm and Brushogs in Watermelon Red, Green Pumpkin, Red Bug, and Pumpkin Seed are just a few colors to try on these picky little devils.
Thursday I caught all my fish out deep; off points and on structure; around 14 to 18 ft on Carolina Rigs and Stanley ½ oz football jigs. The shallow bite was dead. With 49 degree water a lot of fish where suspended in 6 to 14 ft. a refuse to bite. As the water warms up these fish will get more active. This is a great time to take the Bass Class and see some of the places these fish like to move up to and stage. Knowing where some of these big fish are caught will help you when they move in. Don’t wait to long and miss out on learning some good information. If I can help you just give me a call and we’ll see what we can setup.
Keep in mind that this is the time of year a lot of Trophy Bass are caught, If you catch one make sure you take good care of her. Besides now you can go back and try to catch her again next time you are out. If we don’t take care of the Big fish we have now who will?
Now with the lake low there are a lot of stumps that are just under the surface so be extra cautious when you out. If you should hit one and damage your boat you may want to take it over to Toledo Fiberglass in Many La. They do some of the best work I have ever seen and if that’s not enough I know you’ve heard of the “Gorilla Hull” with a lifetime Guarantee. If you haven’t you need to. You bust it they fix it. It weighs about 40 lbs and it is tough.
