Thank You Castaway Rods!

CastAway Rods Logo

I just wanted to take the time out to say THANKS to Castaway Rods and make everyone aware of the service they offer.  I recently had 4 older Castaways that were well used with plenty of battle scars.  I called up to the Castaway factory to ask if it was possible to send my rods in and have new eyes put on in place of broker or damaged ones.  They informed me to send them in with a check for $25 to cover the shipping back to me.  I ended up sending those rods back with a family member who lives in Conroe and they dropped the rods off for me.  A short time later I received a tube back from Castawy with all four rods having a complete set of new eyes on each rod plus a new layer of clear coat.  They did far more than what I was have expected and really stood by their product.  I just wanted to voice my appreciation to Castaway Rods.

Sam Rayburn Property of the Week by Allman Company, REATLORS

We have 3 waterview/ water access lots listed in Section 36 of Rayburn Country.  They should total approximately just under an acre.  They have already been cleared and are ready for someone to come and build on them.  These lots are priced as a package deal for $49,900!   At this price, these lots won’t last long.  The lake is currently 6 feet low (due to the Ike draw down)  so there would normally be more water back behind the lot.

Bass Champs East Texsa Region will be on Lake Sam Rayburn February 28th.  For more information please visit their website at www.basschamps.com

Water Temp.60

Water Clarity 2-3 feet

02-22-09

Sam Rayburn is at 158.30 ft the water temperature has been around 58 degrees warming up to 60 in some of the pockets. The water has been clear in some of the pockets but murky for the most part on the main lake.

The lake is still low but it’s coming up slowly. It’s still a long way from the buck brush and may not get there in time for the spawn. There are still a lot of places these fish can get where you can’t get to them. There is a lot of timber out there so be careful. We had several boats run aground this last week so keep an eye on the ridges and sandbars that are just under the water.

The fishing started off great on Monday.  We caught several fish over 5 lbs off some ledges on a Carolina Rig and Stanley Football Jig.  A couple of fronts moved thru with high winds that muddied the area up and pushed the fish back. These fish suspended off the ledge and just about refused to bite. We pulled out the drop shot and the best bait was a Needle worm by E2 Bait Company. Watermelon Red and Green Pumpkin were the best colors, dipped in chartreuse.   Finding clear water is the most important thing.  There are a lot of fish that are buried in the grass and just refuse to come up and play. The Lipless baits have been catching some fish around the grass edges and will continue to do so as these fish move up. Flukes, Senko’s and Wacky worms worked over the grass will get some of them to bite.  The Stanley Spinner Baits have been picking up some fish along the grass edges and around the stumps White, Chartreuse have been the best. The Male bass will continue to move up and the females will not be too far behind. Good Luck and Catch a Big One for all of us.

If you haven’t heard about The Bass Class on the water check it out on the website and give me a call. Come learn some tricks that will help you catch fish on any lake.

We have been catching a few Crappie in the grass around creek channels and some off the brush piles. The Bridges are giving up some nice slabs.  Remember to be extra careful out there if the wind comes up.

Big D Outdoors is the place to get your boat ready now. The spawn is getting closer by the day..  So, what are you waiting for?  Give them a call 409-769-3700.

Lake Sam Rayburn Fishing Report by Lynn Atkinson

Water Temp.60

Water Clarity 2-3 feet

02-15-09

Sam Rayburn is at 158.18 ft the water temperature has been around 60 degrees. The water has been clear in some of the pockets.  Some of the points are murky from the winds we have had this week.

The last few days the water has warmed up and we have seen some fish roaming the shallows looking around. As always we had a little front move thru Saturday that cooled things down a bit. That means the fish will move a short distant and hold tight there until the temperature comes  up a few degrees. This is just the first wave of fish to move in and we should see more to follow in the up coming weeks. The Trap bite has improved this week with several good fish coming off it with one very over 5 lbs. Most of these fish have been caught around the grass edges off creek channels and ledges. This is a great place to pitch a Stanley Jig around looking for that big bite.  Working a Wacky Worm, Flukes or Senko in the same area has also produced some good fish 10 ft and up has been the best bite, anything deeper the fish have been suspended and hard to catch. We also have caught some fish around 20-25 ft around structure but have not caught anything big out there yet.  I look for these fish to continue to work their way to the staging areas and move in as the days warm up more. Watermelon Red, Green Pumpkin and Pumpkin Seed are just a few of the colors that I like this time of year. Traps would start in the Red and Gold colors and there are several combinations to choose from, Rayburn Red, Toledo Gold and Cherry Bomb are just a few.  Yes I have seen one color catch fish while the other colors will not.  Don’t get stuck on one bait.

Up Date Big Bass

If you’re looking for a big fish, some have started to show up. There was 10.56 lb and an 11.74 lb bought into Jackson Hill Marina Sunday Morning.  The story John Rutledge told was the 11.74 was caught on a jig. John is the happy and lucky fisherman that hauled in the 11.74 lb.

The Jig is a (Big Bass) bait and Stanley Jig has some of the best jigs around. The Bugeye Jig (Football) is one that I have caught lots of fish on. It has a good strong Owner Hook and is great to work around Stumps and Brush piles or pulled over the bare bottom. The head helps keep the bait setting up right and keeps the bait looking right and that makes a lot of difference. Stanley’s Rattling Flat Eye is one that I love working in the grass. It also comes with a great hook; a (Custom Wide Bite Mustard hook); that can take a powerful hook set and hold up. If you set a hook on a big fish, have good line and strong hook to start with and you’ll be on the right track.

Remember the Budweiser Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run thru April 30th. If you haven’t heard, it encourages anglers who caught a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this, and one of them is getting a full color, life size, fiberglass replica of the bass. (October 1-April 30 only)  If your fish meets the requirements listed above, call their toll-free, 24-hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 or (903) 681-0550.Check out the Program rules and benefits at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/budsharelunker/rules/

Jackson Hill Marina is working as a weigh in site for the Sharelunker Program and has Certified Scales for weighing the Potential Lunkers along with a holding tank to hold them. So get you big fish down there and get them weighed in.

Remember this is the time of year that a lot of Trophy Bass are caught, If you catch one make sure you take good care of her. Get her weight, measurements’ and pictures and get her back in the water. Having a replica made is the best thing to do as  it will out last the real thing and look just like her. Besides now you can go back and try to catch her again next time you’re out. If we don’t take care of the Big fish we have now who will?

Bass Fishing at Sam Rayburn is getting HOT!

We finally had a stretch of warm weather this week and we have received numerous reports that the bass have finally turned on up shallow.  I talked to several people this week who were out on the lake and they are talked about how easy the fishing was.   One guys said, “I think I caught a fish on every cast”.  Another angler told me, “You don’t even know how to fish and you can still catch a buch of bass right now”.  Hot baits seem to be Senkos, flukes, rogues, spinnerbaits, and lizards.

If your heading to Rayburn any time soon, be sure to bring some bandaids for your thumb.  Good luck.
